Workplace ergonomics aims to create ideal working conditions to improve employees’ health, well-being, and productivity. This is primarily achieved through the use of ergonomic furniture and equipment, optimal ventilation and lighting, efficient workplace design, and well-conceived break policies. A thoughtful and consistently implemented ergonomic strategy at the workplace minimizes the risk of work-related ailments and injuries and significantly boosts team motivation.
What is ergonomic working and how do I work ergonomically?
Ergonomic working minimizes everyday stresses and strains in the workplace, thereby increasing productivity. Ergonomic furniture and devices, such as keyboards and mice, help you maintain a natural body posture while working. Ensure your monitor is positioned at eye level to prevent neck strain. Pay attention to adequate ventilation and lighting at your workstation, and take regular breaks in coordination with your employer.
Is the employer obligated to design the workplace ergonomically?
Yes, the employer is legally required to comply with occupational safety regulations, which include the obligation to design the workplace ergonomically. Failure to adhere to these legal requirements can have legal consequences for the employer, such as fines or liability claims. In Switzerland, various laws and regulations govern occupational safety, including the Labor Law (ArG), the Ordinance 3 to the Labor Law (ArGV 3), and the Accident Insurance Ordinance (UVV).
What characterizes an ergonomic workplace?
An ergonomic workplace is characterized by adjustable furniture and devices that can be flexibly adapted to individual physical needs. Ergonomic office chairs and standing desks enable a natural and well-being-enhancing posture. Ergonomic keyboards and mice ensure a natural and relaxed hand position while working, and appropriate laptop stands allow for optimal screen placement that relieves neck strain. Other important components include ideal lighting and ventilation to counteract fatigue, as well as sufficient movement and legroom. Another equally important aspect is the ability to take regular breaks.
